Dr. J. Horst Meyer (1926-2016) served on the physics faculty of Duke University for more than 50 years. When he arrived on campus in 1959, Horst was immediately drawn to the beauty of Duke Gardens, which for him induced a happy and grateful state of mind.

As Duke Gardens expanded, his involvement did as well. He co-led the effort to create an endowment for Duke Gardens. He was one of the founding members of the Gardens’ board of advisors and served until his passing. As a longtime member of both the executive and planning committees, Horst had a major influence on the creation of the Duke Gardens we enjoy today.

He will perhaps be most remembered for his involvement with the planning and development of the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum and his placement and tending of bluebird boxes on the Duke University campus.

There has never been a more passionate and generous enthusiast of Duke Gardens than Horst Meyer.

It is in honor of the irrepressible spirit and childlike enthusiasm of this kind and gentle man who considered Duke Gardens a little piece of heaven that we bestow this award upon others whose passion and leadership continue in his path.
